Lions and tigers and bears, ...oh my!... and that's just the beginning! When the creative juices are flowing, life-size animals mastodons, dinosaurs, badgers, woodchucks, and Komodo dragons emerge from sculptor John P. Kennedy's studio to populate homes, schoolyards, museums, and businesses across central New York State. In the works: caribou (reindeer), lions, and leopard heads, including a stegosaur with silicone rubber spikes, an arctic fox, and raptors.
John Kennedy’s sculptures may be seen at many locations along the roadside in central New York. A life-size 8 foot tall mastodon makes a unique landmark at the south end of DeRuyter Lake. A yoke of Devon oxen have found a home at the Pompey Town Hall, a mule enhances the display at the Chittenango Landing museum on the Erie Canal, and a 23 foot crocodile slithers across the lawn at Burton Street School in Cazenovia. In addition, more than fifty of John's pieces have been placed in private collections. He has been enamored with animals since the time when, at the age of five, his father brought him home the Golden Nature Guide book Mammals. The illustrations by James Gordon Irving ignited his intense interest. Recently, four of John’s sculptures appeared in a new book, Garden Ornaments by Ashley Rooney, published by Schiffer Books.
